SLOVENIAN SEA

The Philatelic Numismatic Society of Piran continues to issue commemorative envelopes and commemorative stamps with the theme SLOVENIAN SEA. Our newest selection is the fish brown meagre Sciaena umbra. The brown meagre belongs to the family of drums (Sciaenidae). It grows to a length of 52 cm and reaches a weight of 4 kg. It is very difficult to find the brown meagre, because of its rarity and excessive fishing. Its torso is tall, flattened. The color is dark brown, which continues on his back in a golden reflection, the lower torso is yellow with dark silver dots. It has large firm scales.

Its habitat are stone walls at a depth of 10 to 50 meters, where it finds shelter in the algae on stones. It lives in small groups, it's a shy fish and it doesn't like cold or turbid water. It's sensitive to pollution. It feeds on small fish, crustaceans and molluscs. It found it's ideal habitat in a deep cavity (37.5 m) near Cape Madona in Piran. This deepest point of the Slovenian sea was given the name  "underwater Triglav".

The brown meagre belongs to the benthic community. The term benthos is Greek and means "depths of the sea". Benthos are the organisms which live on, in, or near the seabed. Many organisms adapted to deep-water pressure cannot survive in the upper parts of the water column. The pressure difference can be very significant (approximately one atmosphere for each 10 meters of water depth). Because light does not penetrate very deep ocean-water, the energy source for deep benthic ecosystems is often organic matter from higher up in the water column which drifts down to the depths. This dead and decaying matter sustains the benthic food chain; most organisms in the benthic zone are scavengers or detritivores.

In addition to the commemorative stamp, commemorative envelope and personal stamps there will be a regular illustrated stamp in use. It has a date mechanism and will be in regular use. The illustration used was of fish scales. The stamp is intended for the stamping of mail posted at the aquarium, which is called the post of the sea horse.

The presentation will be held on the day when Italian speaking people like to joke with "pesce d'aprile".
