Festival
Dear mountain film fans,
At the opening of the 4th Mountain Film Festival Domžale we, the organizers, dare say that the festival is becoming a tradition. The annually increasing number of visitors speaks in favour of this claim, giving us each year more self-confidence. We are, of course, trying to make the festival even better each time, provide even better films, present even more colourful side events. Our beginnings in Bled in 2002 seemed extremely promising, however we had to ''take a short break'' after the 2002 festival, as they would say in construction: we had to let our foundations ''dry'' thoroughly. These were namely the foundations we continued building on. We are presently on the level of the 4th construction phase and there is more and more space for mountaineering contents under our roof. In all these years our ''house'' has been noticed abroad; this year we will become member of the ''International Alliance for Mountain Film'', about which you can find out more at www.mountainfilmalliance.org.
The world of mountaineering has always been interesting and tempting for the film. Not long after the first film cameras had started rolling, they were taken into the mountains. A bit more than 100 years ago the first documentary films from the foot of majestic mountains appeared on the film screens; First from under the great mountains of Matterhorn in 1901 and soon after in 1906 from under Mont Blanc. Some dramatic films were produced in the mountains in the 1920’s. German film director Dr. Arnold Fanck is given credit for the revolutionary work in this field. However, to make films interesting, he had to put the right people in front of the cameras. He found two ingenious persons of the time: Luis Trenker and Leni Riefensthal who performed the leading roles in his films. On the Slovenian territory the cameras were taken to the mountains somewhere around the period between the two wars.
We offer you 33 hours of film programme in which you will be able to wander through the vast worldwide geographical territories from Mongolia, Russia, Peru, North America to steep faces of the Baffin Islands, Chamonix Needles and smooth granite faces of the Yosemites; A programme featuring the world's greatest mountaineers of today. In the mountaineering lectures we will get to know Luka Lindič, Leo Holding and Roland Garibotti by listening to their mountaineering stories. In the Retrospective part of the festival we will, for the first time ever, show the film ''V Martuljkovem raju'' (In the paradise of Martuljek) from the rich heritage of Ivan Bolle's mountain films and we will also remember the amazing photographic legacy of Marijan Lipovšek. The side events of the festival will be wrapped up by Matevž Lenarčič's bird's eye view of the Alps.
I wish you a pleasant film journey.
