SUNDAY'S EVENTS – WORKING DEMONSTRATIONS

Working demonstrations on Sunday can be viewed with the purchase of the museum ticket.

Spinning with a spinning wheel

Spinning wool and flax fibres on the spinning wheel was practised widely in the Slovene rural regions in the past, in particular in winter when there was not much to do in the fields. After further treatment the spun yarns were used for knitting and weaving of clothes and other textile products. The woman spinner shows the museum visitors spinning and simultaneous winding of the wool thread using a spinning wheel. In her right hand she holds the roll of wool yarn from which, with her left hand fingers, she twists the fibres into a long strand. Meanwhile she moves the treadle (a foot pedal) that turns a drive wheel. While the wheel is turning, spun thread is wound on a spindle. On Sunday, 23rd May 2010, at 3 p.m.

Demonstration of hand weaving

A woman weaver will demonstrate weaving on old wooden looms originating from Slovenia’s southern region of Bela Krajina. A woman weaver demonstrates flax linen weaving on old wooden looms originating from Slovenia’s southern region of Bela Krajina. The wooden bench that the weaver sits on is an integral part of the loom. By pressing on a foot pedal, a shaft raises a set of heddles through which yarn is threaded. Weft threads are shuttled back and forth across the warp. The weaver manipulates the shuttle by raising and lowering warp threads by a foot pedal. The procedure is repeated many times. On Sunday, 23rd May 2010, at 3 p.m.
