EUROPEAN FAN WORM - Spirographis spallanzanii
EUROPEAN FAN WORM Spirographis spallanzanii, Illustration Matjaž Učakar

AQUARIUM PIRAN

Before us is the new SLOVENIAN SEA-themed issue. For the first time we present an animal that is not a fish. Upon the publication of a personal stamp with the brown meager (Johnius umbra) we promised alternating occurrences of fish and other inhabitants of the sea to show the diversity of underwater life.

Next is: European fan worm - Latin: Sabella spallanzanii (Viviani, 1805)

It is the biggest among fan worms. Better known under the synonym Spirographis spallanzanii (Viviani, 1805). It is classified as a sedentary polychaete, or bristleworm.

Fan worms do not live under rocks, but hide in flexible parchment or hard calcareous tubes. The European fan worm is a large tube dwelling annelid worm with a crown of feeding tentacles formed in two layers. One layer of tentacles is distinctly spiralled. The feeding tentacles can vary in colour from a uniform dull white to brightly banded with stripes of orange, purple and white. The tube of the worm is made of semi-hardened mucus, which is secreted by the worm as it grows. It is often covered by many small organisms and becomes wrinkled towards the base.

Spirograph The European fan worm is named after Lazzaro Spallanzani (1729-1799) an Italian biologist. He researched the microscopic life.

In the years 1782-1783 during the summer holidays he stayed in Istria and Dalmatia.

In addition to stamps and personal stamps, the Aquarium of Piran prepared a postcard and we prepared a maximum card. Illustration and design of greeting cards, personal postal stamp and cancelation is the work of Matjaž Učakar.
