Triglav is not only a mountain, Triglav is a kingdom. A symbol of the nation. Sphinx is the steepest and the most vertiginous section of the North Face of Triglav, one of the highest walls of Eastern Alps. In the period between both World Wars it represented the Alpine arena where numerous interesting mountain climbing ‘fights’ at the highest European level took place. The first ascent over the so called Face of Sphinx proved successful only in 1966 after decennia of attempts by numerous top alpinists. Ante Mahkota and Peter Ščetinin succeeded in conquering the route. Almost thirty years later younger generation of mountain climbers thought that the mentality and climbing technique have advanced enough to allow the Face of Sphinx to be mastered entirely free. After days of studying each individual move over the brink of the vertical, Gregor Kresal and Miha Kajzelj were successful in 1995. In the 60’s the Face of Sphinx was technically the most difficult route in the country and in the middle of the 90’s it became also the most difficult big wall route in Slovenia climbed free.
