A Won Woman Show
Laura Herts
A won woman show is performed by Laura Herts, the American clown now based in France, who is transformed into Gladys, a middle-aged woman who always tried to be the woman she thought she was meant to be.
Laura adventures through the life of Gladys. Gladys is a middle-aged woman who’s always tried to be the woman she was told she was supposed to be. « Gladys! You were born to Married», said Mom and Dad. Unfortunately, she’s a bit quirky and eccentric and doesn’t quite fit in no matter how hard she tries. Sometimes, out on a limb, she let’s herself go and gets totally wacky until she remembers who they said she’s supposed to be. “If only you had married a nice Doctor, your life would have been okay Gladys “ “But I did marry a nice Doctor“ “Oh yeah… um then what went wrong ?
Wild Woman has fire with in her and she can’t stop it. The conditioning of the outside world is just too contrived, not allowing enough room to even be « a who YOU want me too be ». ” You like anorexic sixteen-year-old girls, go fuck yourself!” Yet, “Do I look okay? What’s wrong with me why doesn’t he love ME? Why doesn’t somebody love ME ?” Laura arrives as“ conventional Gladys “ to see the show of the famous wild female rock star the she’s impassioned about. By “ accident “ she ends up on the stage and is confronted with the audience before her. Slowly, but surely she begins to like being “ up there “ in the lights and looses control of her middle- aged nicely kept self as she becomes possessed the ancient spirit of our sister Janis Joplin. Gladys transforms into the person she really is, as emancipation is imposed on her by the lack of reality in all the dreams and myths that Mom, Dad and fairy tales talked about.
Laura Herts
born in Georgetown, Washington D.C, began a world tour at the age of 18 and one year later rediscovered a childhood passion; mime. From that moment, she began to perform wherever possible, and it was while crossing Europe by street performing that she made a stop in Brussels, Belgium to study at the School of Mime - Theater Lassaad in 1986. Setting in Paris in 1987, she followed the teachings of Jacques Lecoq, Daniel Stein, and Philippe Gaulier, took the experience she received in movement theater, clown, neutral mask, and mime and combined them with the elements of street-theater to create a world of comedy , clown, and social satire of her own.
Invited to a number of festivals and theatres, she has performed in France in events such as “Printemps de Rire” , “Festival d’ Humour” , “Été de Vaour”, “Mimos”, “Chalons dans la Rue”, and internationally in events such as “ The International Festival of Clowns”, in Switzerland, “Bizarte”, in Belgium, “Palassos” in Spain, “Jerusalem Festival” in Israel, “Noge Festival” in Japan, “Unter Wasser Fliegen” in Germany, “Crazy Woman” Festival in St.Petersburg, Russia, “Riso de Terra” “festival FILO“ in Brazil, Ecuador, New Calédonia, ...
With a totally "out -there» persona and strong mime technique Laura Herts, moves away from classic mime and clown to reveal a world of her own. She offers her visually comical observations and reflections of a crazy male- oriented world. At a time when the " back lash " against the Women’s Movement has never been stronger, Laura Herts interprets her view of social injustice.American, Laura's humor has been appreciated throughout the world, in France, Russia, Italy, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Spain, England, Russia, Japan, North America, Brazil…She has been performing her unique style of clowning in the streets, circuses, theaters, cabarets, and everywhere possible, being that she is an everywhere clown.
