about text

Nothing is certain in life except death and taxes. Mlakar's everyman knows this truly well; this Slovenian nouveau riche, whose soul relishes in wealth until the heartless debt collector knocks on his door, and she cannot be escaped.

This time, Iztok Mlakar was inspired by Hugo von Hofmannsthal, who exactly a century ago wrote Everyman, a play about the death of a wealthy man, the motive of which originates in a mediaeval English morality play (The Sononynge of Everyman).

Mlakar's contemporary Joseph Everyman - Pepi is stretched between this and the other side: on this side, he dances between the Wife, Poorman Kompare, the Genderme, the Whore and the Holy Trinity, the Lawyer, the Politician and the Financier, and on the other between Death, God, Mother and Devil. The fundamental difference in the understanding of the point of the motive is, of course, established in the denoument, as the hero – after whirlwind through modern trials – is not granted salvation, but …

Iztok Mlakar, with his sublime sensitivity, sharp lashes, but always heartfelt understanding of human virtues and “virtues”, has created an enviable opus of songs, and a comedy A Healer by Force!, which – directed by Vito Taufer and co-produced by Theatre Koper and SNG Nova Gorica – has been performed more than two hundred times and received many awards and won critical and audience acclaim.
